The visual cha-cha

I learned a new dance today. It only has five steps so even those of you with two left feet can do it. You can sing along with me: Wide, medium, tight, tight, tight. Repeat! Wide, medium, cha-cha-cha.
That’s the dance each visual journalist should be doing when covering a story. This tip was given to me by Kieran Foster, the VP Strategic Alliances at VeriCorder. Kieran has an extensive background in visual story telling and this mantra is his way of teaching people to shoot just as they see, whether it’s stills or video:
When you enter a situation, you look at the overall scene,

Taking in the whole scene.

then you focus in a bit closer, limiting your field a vision and the unnecessary elements,

Medium shot, getting in closer.

then your eye looks for the details in the situation.

The tight shots add the color and detail to the story.
