One of the things I miss about working at a newspaper is those occasional times when we would shoot photos in a weird shape, just to give the page a different look.
That’s what I was doing today as I watched Serena Williams’ second singles match of the China Open. I was trying to “drive it deep” as we would say, having the image fall into a long, vertical shape, driving it deeper onto the page.
It doesn’t work quite as well on a website because a shot like this can’t be seen in its entirety on the screen. But it’s still fun to do.
I wanted to spend some time actually watching the game today, so I was working from the upper levels of Diamond Court instead of taking a valuable spot in the photographers’ pit. The blue court is just a wonderful, clean background.
